“I learned the hard way that I really did need a handstand coach.”

 My journey into the Circus Art of Hand Balancing began when I was 36 years old. I started practicing handstands after yoga class, between sets at the gym, and all over my house.  Despite being totally self-taught, I was reasonably decent at it... or so I thought.  

I began to search for more information about hand balance and I discovered that my form was less than ideal. So, I started over, going from 60s balance to ZERO. It was frustrating, but I was determined, and eventually I corrected my position and regained my balance. Naturally, I thought the next step was to learn the one-armed handstand, right? Ha! I was so wrong.

I attended my first 5 day intensive hand balance retreat, expecting to be given the tools I needed to begin my one-armed handstand journey. Instead, I was given a large slice of humble pie. I had no foundation. Even my most basic entries were inconsistent at best. So I went home, put aside my one-armed goals, and spent an entire year working on nothing but the basics. Wow, what a difference that made in my practice. The following year I attended another 5 day intensive and this time I was ready. I have been working with a coach on my one-armed handstand for two years now. It is a beast of a skill, especially for someone who didn’t go to circus school and started so late in life, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

I learned the hard way that I really did need a handstand coach. No one wants to start all over again - twice! So, while there's no ONE secret for doing a handstand, doing them correctly and safely over time requires quality instruction, practice, patience and a coach who's crazy passionate about handstands -- like me :)
